J. R. Burkholder's life and work as ethicist, churchman, and social change agent spanned and influenced dramatic changes in twentieth-century Mennonite peace theology and ecumenical engagements. Prophetic Peacemaking is a collection of thirty of Burkholder's most prescient essays on pacifism, patriotism, public witness, Mennonite ethics, health care, stewardship, vocation, service, and other issues of authentic discipleship. These essays are not so much period pieces as reflections on faithful living relevant for future generations of peacemakers. A former Burkholder student, ethicist Keith Graber Miller edited the volume, providing an introduction "on being Burkholderian" and sketching the historical context for each chapter.

J. R. Burkholder is an ethicist, churchman, and social change agent whose life and work spanned and influenced dramatic changes in twentieth-century Mennonite peace theology and ecumenical engagements. After brief terms of mission work in Brazil and pastoral ministry in Pennsylvania, Burkholder taught for twenty-two years at Goshen (IN) College and another dozen years at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary (Elkhart, IN). He was co-founder of Goshen College's peace studies program; founding director of the Dallas Peace Center; program administrator for Mennonite Central Committee and Fellowship of Reconciliation; coordinator of peace and social concerns for Mennonite Board of Congregational Ministries; and a visiting professor at a Costa Rican seminary and a South African university. Now in his ninth decade, the father of five and grandfather of eight continues his writing, preaching, and activism from his Goshen, Indiana, home.

"J. R. Burkholder has the intellect of an academic, the passion of an activist, and the heart of a pastor. Prophetic Peacemaking brings the three together, combining his autobiographical reflections with a selection of lectures and writings that show the breadth of his thought. If you are seeking to better integrate faithful living with a commitment to peacemaking, I commend this book to you."
—Jim Wallis, President, Sojourners, and author, Rediscovering Values

—Jim Wallis, President, Sojourners, and author, Rediscovering Values

"Out of a lifetime of wisdom and Christian witness, J. R. Burkholder provides a map showing us where we are and why, and helping us find our way among approaches to nonresistance, active peacemaking, and social engagement. Faithful to the tradition of John Howard Yoder, Burkholder charts the vital linkage between the lordship of Christ and a commitment to nonviolence in a pluralistic world."
—Glen Stassen, Lewis B. Smedes Professor of Christian Ethics, Fuller Theological Seminary

"This patchwork of essays, sermons, and presentations spans almost fifty years of Mennonite social ethics in which J. R. Burkholder was a participant and careful observer. Segments of this conversation and bright flashes of insight are stitched together in this volume so that, like a quilt, they give an overall impression of a dynamic, developing movement in the life of the church."
—Gayle Gerber Koontz, Professor of Theology and Ethics, Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary
